What is Orleton Parish Council up to?
Pavements and bikes
We have received complaints from residents in Hallet’s Well about bikes and motorbikes being ridden on the pavement. We have no role in policing this sort of issue, but it must be pointed out that this makes many elderly residents anxious about being injured – and these injuries can be much more serious for those of an advanced age with underlying health issues. We have passed on these concerns to the Neighbourhood Policing Team who will be monitoring the situation.
Severn Trent and Pollution
Following a meeting with Severn Trent in March 2025, to address our complaint about sewer flooding, they have begun work to try to reduce the amount of surface water entering the foul drainage system from the highway. So far this has focussed on inspection chambers below Green Lane and on the B4361, which have been rebuilt and sealed. Non-return valves have also been installed at Millbrook Way bridge and additional work will be carried out in the area around Kings Road.
Severn Trent has also approached the Parish Council and the Highway Authority with a view to collaborative working to identify and isolate areas where floodwater is likely to pool and cause particular issues with infiltration. They have also scoured the rising main from Orleton to Woofferton with an ice plug to remove oxidised iron deposits and improve pipe capacity.
This work not only stems from local protest and our determination to see Severn Trent meet its legal obligations, but also from accumulated fines for the 6 spills into the brook last year and an increase in the level of fines going forward – which will now rise to £100,000 per incident.
Gods Acre – Strimming
The Parish Council has agreed to use the services of our Lengthsman to strim this area – which is so lovingly maintained by volunteers throughout the year. The resulting hay will be used for a number of purposes locally.
Dropped curb at the Maidenhead junction
The Parish Council will be asking the Highway Authority to consider the installation of a dropped curb opposite the Maidenhead p/h. This has been raised with them before, but an increase in the numbers using this crossing has again emphasised how important this is to ensure the safety of the disabled. It may also be able to be incorporated as part of works to improve drainage at this location.
