What is going on at Orleton Parish Council?
VE Day Celebrations
Although the parish council had no formal role in the VE Day celebrations, we wish to record our thanks for the hard work and dedication of all those who made the VE Day coffee morning on the 7th May and the commemorative service at St Georges on the 8th May, such an unqualified success. The public support for both events was very significant and reflects enormous credit on those who spent so many months planning and preparing for them.
Parish Meeting
Graham Shaw, Chairman of ORA, and Ward Cllr Dan Hurcomb, were guest speakers at this year’s Parish Meeting. Graham spoke about the work of ORA in maintaining and improving the recreation ground with very positive news about the refurbishment of the pavilion, which is now proceeding at pace. Dan Hurcomb updated residents on the progress of the highway flood alleviation scheme at the Maidenhead junction which is also now at an advanced stage. David Lane spoke about sewer flooding and the pollution of Brimfield Brook, with a sobering assessment of the state of the industry and the rural network. David did however provide a very upbeat summary of the progress being made by many organisations across the parish to improve and enhance the life of the village, including a summary of the work of the parish council over the last year. Parish Walk
The first Orleton parish footpath walk was undertaken on Sat 3rd May. Nine residents joined Martin Bradford, our parish footpaths officer, for some good fun, enjoyable walking and tea and coffee in the garden of The Boot afterwards. These walks will be a regular monthly event, so please look out for details of future events on Facebook – all are welcome!
Mortimer Drive Signs
The additional street signs for Mortimer Drive have now been put up by Martin Bradford, with extensive work by Sheila Bradford, Ron Gittings, Alex Green and Dave Robbins, to restore, paint and re-mount the old castings and produce three indistinguishable replicas out of fiberglass. These will considerably improve navigation for those unfamiliar with this part of Orleton!
Orleton Football Tournament
Much praise to those who promoted and organised this year’s football tournament – which was a resounding success on the weekend of the 10/11 May. Because of the dry weather additional parking was also available at the Village Hall and in Ivor George’s field, which greatly reduced traffic congestion. Stewards were also plentiful and highly effective, so thank you to all those at ORA and ODJFC for their work in securing a successful event and looking out for the interests of residents and road users during this busy festival of football.
Buntings
Thank you to Nicki and Justin Gunn and Sally Green for their considerable efforts in putting up the festive buntings in the village. These are durable and purchased by the parish council for use by the Festivals Committee on a more sustainable and long-term basis. This was a challenging operation but very much appreciated for the St George’s Day and the VE Day celebrations.
