What is going on at Orleton Parish Council?
New Faces
The Parish Council is delighted to welcome Stacy Perry as our new Clerk. Many residents will be aware of Stacy’s longstanding commitment to the community as a former co-chair of Orleton Playgroup and as a Parish Councillor until 2022. She currently moderates the Orleton Village Chat Facebook page and coordinates the pre-loved uniform shop for Orleton School PTA.
Following an uncontested election in March, the Parish Council is also pleased to welcome three new councillors, Colin Mitchell, Mike Tipping, and Mark Wetton. Cllr Mitchell has served on the council previously. Cllr Tipping is active with the Orleton Footpath Maintenance Volunteers. Cllr Wetton is one of our Land Drainage Volunteers.
We shall value the knowledge and expertise that all four bring to their posts.
Land Drainage Volunteers
The Parish Council has approved the use of hedge-cutters and strimmers by volunteers clearing Brimfield Brook. We must thank Cllr Jones for his work in drafting the necessary Risk Management and Method Statements to underpin this work.
The first task undertaken following this decision was the clearance of Brimfield Brook adjacent to Captain’s Meadow, which was heavily infested with overgrowth. We thank Shropshire Homes for consenting to this work. The culvert under Millbrook Way bridge was also dredged and the entrances cleared of debris.
The Highway Flood Alleviation Scheme
At the Parish Council meeting held on 24 April, Cllr Lane and Ward Cllr Dan Hurcomb presented the final designs for the scheme to capture surface water on the B4361 and redirect it around the village, along with the costings and a proposed delivery timetable. The meeting cannot be reported on in detail due to Grapevine’s submission deadlines, but further details of the scheme, including a copy of the PowerPoint presentation, will be on the Parish Council website, https://orleton-pc.gov.uk/.
The Natural Flood Management measures above the B4361 are also at an advanced stage and work is due to commence on overspill ponds in September, led by the Severn Rivers Trust. Meanwhile the project timetable for the removal of the culvert immediately above the B4361 has been delivered to the Parish Council for review.
Parish Meeting
The annual Parish Meeting will be held on Wednesday, 13 May at 7pm at the Village Hall. The guest speaker will be Jacob Laughran of the Severn Rivers Trust who will talk about their work promoting efforts to increase flood resilience through natural land management and in particular their work above Orleton where they are currently working with landowners.
The precept
At our November meeting, the Parish Council voted to increase the Parish Precept by 2.5% for the 2026-27 fiscal year, significantly below the current rate of inflation. When calculated for the current number of properties in the parish, this worked out to a 1% increase per household, as shown on the council tax statements sent out last month.
Dog Waste
Thank you to everyone who is disposing of dog waste in the appropriate bins around the parish. We have been told, however, that dog waste is being left in the verges around Orleton Rise and presenting a problem for their groundsmen. There is no excuse for anyone to not pick up after their dogs, especially as there is a dog waste bin on Green Lane just south of the caravan park’s entrance. This bin is emptied by the team at Orleton Rise for everyone’s convenience and as part of their commitment to our community, for which the Parish Council is greatly appreciative
The Parish Council would also like to remind people that non-dog-waste rubbish should not be put in the dog waste bins. This results in there being less space for dog waste which is then left on the ground, creating an unsightly mess and a health hazard.
Next Meeting
The next meeting of Parish Council will be on Thursday, 21 May in Orleton Village Hall at 6pm. The meeting will start with the Annual Meeting of the Parish Council, and the Ordinary Meeting will follow. Members of the public are encouraged to attend.
